What do reaction time results mean?
The average human reaction time to a visual stimulus is about 250 milliseconds, and commonly cited ranges put most people between 200 and 300 ms. Elite esports players often react in 150–200 ms. Reaction time slows gradually with age, so compare your score against your own age group.

How this test works
Each round arms the pad, then waits a randomised interval before turning lime. The delay is random by design: a fixed delay would be learnable within two rounds, and you would end up measuring your internal counting rather than your response to a signal.
Timing starts the moment the pad changes colour and stops on your click. Five rounds are collected and averaged, because a single round is noise — one lucky or unlucky round can swing 50 ms in either direction, and the average is the only figure stable enough to track.
False starts never count against you. If you click before the pad turns, the round simply retries. This is deliberate. A test that records early clicks as very fast scores rewards guessing, and a leaderboard full of guessers measures nothing. A test that penalises them by adding time punishes you for a lapse rather than measuring your reaction. Retrying is the only option that leaves the measurement intact.
Reading your result
You get two numbers worth attention, and most people look at the wrong one.
- Your average across five rounds is your actual reaction time. This is the number to track.
- Your best single round is mostly luck. It tells you the edge of your range, not where you live.
- Your spread — the gap between best and worst — is the underrated one. A narrow spread means consistent attention. A wide spread usually means fatigue or wandering focus, and it is the first thing that improves when you sleep properly.
Someone averaging 260 ms with a 30 ms spread is more reliable in practice than someone averaging 245 ms with a 120 ms spread, even though the second person has the better headline number.
What moves your score today
Day-to-day swings of 20–40 ms are normal and do not mean anything has changed about you. The usual contributors:
- Sleep. The largest single factor, and it shows up as occasional very slow rounds rather than uniformly slower ones.
- Time of day. Most people are measurably slower at the trough of their alertness curve.
- Tension. A pre-loaded, tensed finger has to overcome its own resistance before it can move. Relaxed readiness beats straining.
- Background load. What else your machine is doing adds latency you will never see directly.

What this test measures — and what it does not
This is a simple visual reaction time test: one stimulus, one response. It is not a reflex test. A reflex is involuntary, routed through your spinal cord, and takes well under 50 ms — no browser can measure one. It is also not a choice reaction test, where several possible signals each require a different response, which is what driving and competitive games actually demand. Browser timing carries unavoidable latency. A 60 Hz display can hold a rendered frame for up to about 16 ms before you see it; a 144 Hz display cuts that to roughly 7 ms. Wireless peripherals and input polling add their own small delays. We cannot subtract any of this, which means your score includes your equipment.
That is exactly why cross-site comparison is misleading — the same person can differ by 30–50 ms between setups. Compare against your own history on the same device. That comparison is valid; the others are not.

Yes, gradually. Reaction time is typically fastest in your mid-20s and slows a few milliseconds per decade afterwards. Regular sleep, exercise, and practice can offset much of the decline, so compare yourself against your own age group rather than the overall average.
