What Is a Good CPS? Click Speed Averages, Records, and Technique

Most people click between 4 and 6 times per second in a standard 5-second CPS test. Anything above 8 CPS is fast, 10 or more is exceptional, and the fastest recorded clickers reach roughly 14–16 CPS — but only with special techniques like jitter or butterfly clicking.

Two things in that table need declaring. The CPS ranges are widely cited figures rather than our own measurement, and we cannot tell you how many people are behind them, what mice they used, or how outliers were treated — that information is almost never published with the numbers. The rank names are ours, and the thresholds are ones we chose; a site with different thresholds is not wrong, it is using different thresholds. Both facts are stated on our methodology page too.

Where 8, 10, and 12 CPS actually fall

Those three numbers are the ones people search for most, and the usual answers are somebody's impression. Here is what our own submissions say instead, recomputed from the live dataset rather than written in at build time.

Our own data disagrees with the table — and that is informative

We record the scores submitted on this site and publish the distribution with its sample size attached. It does not match the ranges above. Among submissions to the 5-second test, the median sits close to 11 CPS, and the slowest quarter is still above 9 — a band the table calls fast enough to need a technique.

The likely explanation is not that these visitors are extraordinary. It is that nobody arrives at a clicks-per-second test by accident. People who look one up are disproportionately players who already care about click speed and have practised it, so a test's own visitors are a poor stand-in for people in general. Any site quoting an average from its own traffic — including this one — is measuring that filter as much as it is measuring humans.

So the useful question is not "what is a good CPS" in the abstract but "good compared to whom". Against the general population the cited 4–6 range is the better reference; against the people who actually take these tests, our CPS distribution data is, with the sample size stated so you can judge how much it is worth. When you run the test, the result tells you how many of those submissions you beat rather than comparing you to a number nobody can source.

"Good" depends on what you are comparing against

The single biggest reason people misjudge their own score is that they compare across conditions that are not comparable. Before deciding whether your number is good, three things have to match.

Get those three matched and comparison becomes meaningful. Leave them unstated — as most posted scores do — and the number carries almost no information.

Why test length changes your score

CPS is not constant: your hand fatigues within seconds. A burst score on a 5-second test typically drops 15–30% on a 30-second test. That is why ReflexArcade offers 5, 10, and 30-second modes — compare like with like, and treat the 5-second mode as your headline number.

The drop-off between modes is more revealing than any single figure. A small gap means your technique is sustainable; a large one means your headline number describes a burst you cannot hold. Both are worth knowing, and only running all three modes tells you which you have.

Your device sets a ceiling before you do

Switching from a trackpad to a mouse is the largest single improvement available to most people, and it is not a small effect — a trackpad simply cannot be actuated at the rate a mouse button can. If you are scoring below 4 CPS, the device is the most likely explanation before anything about your hand.

Touchscreens behave differently again rather than simply worse. A tap travels through a different event path, with the operating system deciding whether contact qualifies as a tap at all, and sampling rates that vary widely between devices. Phone and desktop scores should be kept as separate histories rather than compared.

Within mice, the effect is smaller than marketing suggests. Lighter switches and lower debounce time help — mostly for fast alternating techniques, hardly at all for normal clicking. The realistic gain from a mouse upgrade is one to two CPS. Changing technique is worth several times that.

Clicking techniques, explained honestly

Honest caveat: outside of a few niche games (notably some Minecraft PvP formats), raw CPS above ~8 has little practical effect. Aim, timing, and decision speed matter far more in most games — a high CPS is best treated as a fun benchmark, not a skill ceiling.

What happens inside a 30-second run

The 30-second mode is not simply the 5-second mode extended, and watching what happens across it is more instructive than the final average.

Most people follow the same shape. The first few seconds are close to their burst rate. Somewhere in the middle the forearm begins to fatigue and the rate settles into a lower plateau. In the final stretch it either holds or degrades further, depending largely on how much tension was being used to generate the clicks in the first place.

That last point is the useful one. A relaxed technique plateaus and stays there; a tension-driven one keeps falling, because the muscles producing the clicks are the ones getting tired. If your 30-second score collapses rather than levelling off, the fix is usually to relax your grip rather than to build endurance.

It also explains why the final average understates what you were doing at the start and overstates what you were doing at the end. The average is a summary of a curve, and the curve is the interesting part.

Why "world record" CPS figures should be read loosely

Claimed records circulate widely and are difficult to verify, for reasons that are structural rather than suspicious.

Different tests count differently. Some start the timer on the first click, others when the page is ready. Some listen for mouse-down events, others for complete click events — which produces different totals precisely in the regime that fast techniques operate in. Under heavy input rates, browsers can also coalesce or drop events, so two browsers on the same machine can disagree about the same hand.

Add drag clicking, which registers bursts from a hardware interaction rather than from discrete presses, and the top of any leaderboard stops describing human clicking speed at all. Treat headline records as entertainment, and treat your own history on one test as data.

How to improve your CPS

Realistically, moving from 4 to 7 CPS with ordinary clicking is achievable for most people and costs nothing in accuracy. Beyond that you are choosing between techniques, and the choice is worth making deliberately rather than by imitation.
